大好きなエミリー・ディキンソンの詩のイメージに相応しい曲調だと思う。
If you were coming in the Fall,
I'd brush the Summer by
With half a smile, and half a spurn,
as Housewives do, a Fly.
If I could see you in a year,
I'd wind the months in balls ー
And put them each in separate Drawers,
For fear the numbers fuse ー
If only Centuries, delayed,
I'd count them on my Hand.
Subtracting, till my fingers dropped
Into Van Dieman's Land.
If certain, when this life was out ー
That yours and mine, should be
I'd toss it yonder, like a Rind,
and take Eternity.
But, now, uncertain of the length
Of this, that is between,
It goads me, like the Goblin Bee ー
That will not state ー its sting.

ああ ひさしくも
秋が近づいてくると、無性に八木重吉の詩が読みたくなる。「秋の瞳」だ。有名なのは、例の「うつくしいもの」という詩だろう。
わたしみづからのなかでもいい
わたしの外の せかいでも いい
どこにか 「ほんとうに 美しいもの」は ないのか
それが 敵であつても かまわない
及びがたくても よい
ただ 在るといふことが 分りさへすれば、
ああ ひさしくも これを追ふにつかれたこころ
そうなのだ。高い秋の空を見上げる頃になると、「ああ ひさしくも これを追ふにつかれたこころ」という想いがしわじわと押し寄せてくる。まだ猛暑日が続いているようだが、九月はもうすぐ。あっという間に「秋」はやってくる。
そして、もうひとつ。この「うつくしいもの」に負けず劣らず好きなのが、「雲」という詩だ。

薄の穂がさまになる季節になってきた。
人生は楽しく生きて
仕事で一年ぶりの札幌。
若い頃から札幌に憧れていた。たぶんこの詩のせいである。吉井勇。
家の中庭に、あるいは部屋のベランダに、ライラックの花を飾りひとときの輝かしい日々を楽しむ人々。……人生はかくありたし。この詩碑は大通公園にある。
さて、今年も札幌の大通公園では、短い夏を愉しむための準備が着々と進んでいるようだ。
